IRON INFUSIONS

Iron is a critical element that is necessary for the oxygen-carrying capacity of haemoglobin in muscle, tissues and red blood cells. Iron is also involved in many other functions that are essential for the maintenance of cells in the human body.

Your body is unable to produce an adequate quantity of healthy red blood cells that transport oxygen if it lacks sufficient iron. Iron replacement therapy is used to treat iron deficiency anaemia and replenish the body and iron stores.

Early detection of iron
deficiency can be assisted by routine screening.

What is involved with an iron infusion?

  • You will see your GP for a blood test, once those results come back your doctor will give you a script for the iron.

  • Once you have filled the script you will then bring that to your appointment as well as your recent blood test.

  • You will then be cannulated by our Registered nurse

  • Your vital observations will be taken before the infusion, 5 minutes in, 10 minutes in and then once the iron has been infused.

  • Your infusion will run over 15-20 minutes

  • Once the infusion is finished you will have to remain at the clinic for a further 30 minutes to be monitored.

  • You will receive your after care kit and instructions before leaving.

Our clinic is equipped with a defibrillator and first aid equipment required to assist with any allergic reactions that do occur if they do.

Please note iron infusions are not done with mobile bookings due to the risks involved.
